With the worst of Alberta winter still yet to come I thought posting about what to do when your water won't turn might be helpful.
1. Go to the basement with a spray bottle with just water in it.
2. Look for water pipes that has frost on it. * If you happen to find a frosty pipe with 'split' in it, turn the water off immediately and call us or a plumber as soon as possible. *
3. Turn any tap on if it isn't already, and then warm up the pipe with your hair dryer slowly, be sure to keep the dryer back 2 to 3 feet from the pipe.
4. If you are unable to locate the frozen pipe visually, try feeling the water pipe with your hand. You can test it by misting the pipe with your spray bottle, if it freezes congratulation you have located it. Keep in mind you may have more than one section of frozen pipe.
5. If your tap is still not working, it is likely you have another frozen section. Keep looking. Especially at pipes that are near outside concrete walls.
What You Can do to Keep Pipes From Freezing
First and foremost, keep your house warm! Your thermostat on the main floor may tell you it is +15 but your basement is usually several degrees colder, particularly if it is uninsulated. Another solution may be heat tape. Wrap heat tape around water pipes that are known to have frozen in the past. The most immediately expensive but most cost effective long term is to insulate your basement. Insulation will allow your home to retain more heat, result in lower gas bills, and most importantly keep your pipes from freezing.
